Gum Disease is Often Silent – Do You Really Know If You Have Gum Disease Or Not?

There are many new patients who present with gum disease on a monthly basis. Few people are safe from this disease. It is believed that up to 80% of people have periodontal disease. Low estimates say 40%, higher estimates say 80%.

Periodontal disease is often silent. This cruel disease can occur regardless of your use of brushing and flossing techniques which is part of why it is so confusing. However, there are a variety of diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, that appear to have some sort of relationship with periodontitis. In the advanced stages, teeth will fall out.

Gingivitis is the beginning stage, it is considered reversible in that permanent damage can be prevented at this point. This is where bacteria and even plaque will build up on the gums. You may or may not begin to show symptoms. You may or may not see bleeding of the gums.

Prevention is important but please realize that even the most diligent brushing and flossing may not prevent gum disease. If you have developed the disease, it does not necessarily mean that you have poor hygiene habits. It is a confusing and bewildering disease and the answers are not always forthcoming from the people who are supposed to help us defeat this disease.

Visiting a periodontist every six months for a regular check is certainly a good idea. If you already have the disease, then you may require regular cleanings every 3 months. There are some who may even need cleanings every 2 months. There are a variety of tools and understandings about this disease that go far beyond regular brushing, flossing and mouthwash. It is a myth to think that those basic things alone will save one hundred percent of the people from gum disease.
