The ranch style home is found in most every community of the United States, and usually in abundance, in what was in its early years, the suburbs of cities and towns.
The ranch style home popularized the spacious interior, open floor plan, allowing for the bedrooms to be on one side of the home, connected to each other by a hallway, with sometimes a master bedroom on the opposite side of the home. In the middle of the rectangular ranch structure, was the floor plan for the first time in modern architecture, the living room, kitchen, and dining room all became united in one space, with only some element of division to give each area its identity, but still keeping it all open.
Sometimes there as a central fireplace, or a brick fireplace on the living room wall. The open floor plan is what most home buyers want when they are out looking for homes. In fact, the open floor plan is to be expected. People want the feeling of open space, and not a closed-in, cell like interior. A real estate agent in Florida did a survey over a period of a year to determine what home buyers look for when home shopping. They were asked to list the five top elements of a home that they absolutely have to have in a home. In almost every survey, an open floor plan was listed. Frank Lloyd Wright can be congratulated for opening up the home, bringing in the light, natural forms, natural materials, and simplicity to the interior design. He saw a home that would be very practical, suitable, and popular to people all around the nation.
Today, buyers have many more choices of housing styles, and designs, and the large supply of smaller eclectic style homes that are being built everywhere are very attractive, and often affordable to buyers, and especially first-time home buyers. However, after viewing ranch style homes in a community, and seeing what these homes have to offer, the buyer is ready to fill out the real estate forms, and make a purchase, seeing that the new home will serve as a comfortable place for the children to play and grow up in, for neighborhood gatherings, outdoor cooking on the grill, interior warmth from the big brick or stone fireplace, a room to park the cars, easy access to the roof top to rake the leaves, since ranch homes are often situated in neighborhoods of old oaks or pines, a yard big enough for gardening pleasures, and a strong foundation that has stood the test of time, if it is an older ranch home. The buyer is satisfied. Settlement day has arrived, and the legal forms have been signed and delivered. The buyer walks aways with a uniquely American architectural icon: the ranch style home.
