Fire Fighters exhibit bravery every minute of each day

The fire department is a public service to help eliminate the damage from fires. Using the best equipment and technology available, the fire fighters work together to safely remove people and animals from the harm of fire while containing the flames. This is risky work, but very rewarding to those who do it. Many fire department workers have given their lives while in the line of duty.

When they are not putting out fires, the fire department is working hard to ensure all the equipment is working properly as well as ongoing drills and training for the crew. Fire awareness and prevention has become a big area they spend time and money on. The are often found in the schools talking about fire safety with children as well as getting families to have a safety plan in place in case a fire does break out.

One of the main reasons fire departments go to the schools is because they often look scary to children during a fire with all of their equipment on. Some children have hid from the fire department because they are afraid of how they look. By talking to the children about this and letting the children see them in their safety equipment; it has greatly reduced this fear.

Some fire departments have purchased a mobile similar that they use for children and adults. It gives the same affects as smoke as far as filling the air and hindering visibility. People inside have to stop, drop, and roll as well as crawl to doors and entry ways. It is a very realistic approach to show people how to properly react if they are in a fire.

Fire departments also do volunteer work as their time allows. They don’t do much rescuing cats from trees anymore, but they just might if their time allows. They will come to you home to check your smoke detectors, your exists in case of a fire, carbon monoxide levels, and to evaluate your fire safety plan.

Most fire departments have a Captain and several full time employees. These are the main people who keep the department running. However, many others are often needed to battle a fire successfully. These are volunteers from the community who have completed training and donate their time to help ensure a fast response.
