Basement Conversions: Things to Know beforeTransforming them into Great Livable Spaces
Many homeowners opt to do loft conversions. When in fact, there is a better space for conversions they can do located within their homes.Â
Not all parts of your house are efficiently used. Sometimes, they are neglected and eventually, degraded without much use. This type of spaces can be transformed into beautiful livable spaces, especially if they have high-timbered floorings. Doing so allows you as a homeowner to enjoy a better home with great benefits.Â
Your Basement is the Right CandidateÂ
One of the best spaces for conversion is your basement. Most homeowners who have cellars or basement have the tendency to under use them. Sometimes, they are just used as one of the dumping areas for your old stuff. As they accumulate, they just become a breeding ground for dust and various microorganisms. Some basements are not even well ventilated. Therefore, moisture can build in living the place dampened and easily degraded over time.Â
As a homeowner, which one do you prefer: a basement converted to a livable space that can add beauty and functionality to your home or your old basement that is dark, gloomy and non-existent (which by the way is starting to become a health hazard for the family)? Definitely, you would have to choose the former. Not only is it pleasing to the eyes, it also improves your home value. Thus, making them appealing to buyers (should you plan to resell the property).Â
Considerations in ConversionÂ
Before one jumps into the activity of cellar or basement conversion, it is important to determine the feasibility of the project. One should venture on a practical conversion so as not to have great financial consequences in the process.Â
Normally, converting a basement is only feasible for those who have a basement or a cellar. If you do not have one, there is no point of digging a hole under your homes to have them. If this is the case, a loft conversion may be ideal for you.Â
The purpose of conversion should also be considered. This can highly influence the design and the different systems that should be working upon completion. However, one should also look into the practicality of the design. Newer basements may have great architectural issues that need to be addressed. Therefore, the design you originally wanted may be tweaked to make it more applicable with basement foundation.Â
Since cost is much of an issue, people who want these projects will be swayed to find means of lower it. As in any home improvement practice, people are empowered to do things on their own. However, you have to think if you are capable of handling the project by yourself before you become over confident. Remember, you want a livable space that is of good quality, safe and cost-efficient. If you have no clue what you will be doing, it is best to seek professional help. Anyway, the cost of hiring contractors can outweigh the benefits you can get.Â
Lastly, consider building codes, regulations and Homeowner’s Association ruling concerning conversions. You may be required to get a permit or obtain their approval before doing any changes.
